Before and After School Programs

Welcome to the After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program!

ASES is aligned with the regular school day and provides a safe physical and social-emotional environment that supports building positive relationships.  The program is funded by a state grant and has attendance requirements for participating students.

ASES is offered before and after school every day that school is in session. ASES schools are Bernardo Heights Middle School, Black Mountain Middle School, Meadowbrook Middle School, Mesa Verde Middle School, Oak Valley Middle School (only after school), Twin Peaks Middle School, and Valley Elementary School.

After School

ASES is an extension of the school day and offers literacy and academic enrichment components. Studies show that participation in the ASES Program increases students’ attachment to their schools, improves academics, and provides a safe environment for students.

First priority shall go to pupils who are identified by the program as homeless youth, as defined by the federal McKinney-Vento homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C. Sec. 11434a), at the time that they apply for enrollment or at any time during the school year, and to pupils who are identified by the program as being in foster care. 

Second priority for enrollment will be granted to students who are eligible for Free or Reduced Price Meals (FRPM).

Third priority will be given to students who attend the program daily, for the full range of program hours. The number of days attended per week is monitored throughout the school year. Students that utilize the full range of program hours (i.e. 1.5 hours before school and/or 3 hours after school) will be given greater priority over students that do not. If there is a wait list of students, they are added to the program as current students who do not meet prioritized attendance requirements are dropped. 

Additional locally-determined, site-based priorities (e.g. single parent household, active duty military, targeted academic intervention, etc.) may also be considered when enrolling students in the ASES program in order to meet the unique needs of students in each middle school community. 


Please check the school’s website for registration details. ASES information is presented at the spring parent orientation meeting for incoming 6th grade students, with time to ask questions following the program. The school’s website will provide specific spring registration procedures for incoming 6th grade students.

Current students in ASES may register in the spring – see each school’s website or check with the site coordinator. At Valley Elementary, registration for 1st – 5th grade students is held during school registration.  Middle School registration for new students is during school registration days in August. Depending on the number of openings, students may register for the program or be placed on a wait list. Additionally, students may register throughout the school year if there are openings; and if the program is full, students will be wait-listed.

The intent of the grant is that students who attend ASES should participate in the program for the full range of hours offered each day. 

Purpose and Objectives

The After School Education and Safety (ASES) Program is designed to provide literacy, academic enrichment, and safe constructive alternatives for students. 

Program Elements

The ASES program is aligned with the regular school day. A safe physical and emotional environment and opportunities for relationship-building are provided. The following two elements are incorporated in the program’s academic support and enrichment activities:

  1. An educational and literacy element provides homework assistance and academic support to help students meet state standards in reading/language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. A broad range of activities are based on students’ needs and interests.
  2. An education enrichment element offers a variety of additional programs and activities that reinforce and compliment the school’s academic program. This includes positive youth development strategies and prevention activities that may utilize visual and performing arts, community service-learning, recreation and physical activity, health/nutritional promotion, career awareness and work preparation activities based on student needs and interests.

Program Structure

ASES activities, based on above program elements, are organized on a four to six-week rotation and are posted on an activities calendar. Students select their activities from the daily schedule.  Academic support is provided for all students and activities reflect students’ interests in sports, recreation, technology, arts and crafts, gardening, food and nutrition, and other areas. The daily schedule includes a snack based on state nutritional guidelines. 

Before School

ASES before school programs open at least 1½ hours before the start of school. Please check the school websites for specific times. Students must participate for the full program time. A breakfast snack is served to students who arrive within the first half of the program time.
